Whether you’re staining floors, furniture or cabinets, we’ve got a variety of stains, lacquers, varnishes, sealants and wood-stain removers to help you complete all your do-it-yourself stain projects. We even carry marine varnish for boats. But with so many options to choose from, picking the right product for your project can be difficult.
Lacquer creates a clear, high-gloss finish and is ideal for metal and wood surfaces but not floors. Orange shellac, on the other hand, adds a warm look to wood surfaces and can be used on floors.

Once you’re done staining or refinishing, you’ll want to seal with a protective topcoat. Minwax® PolycrylicTM sealer is a water-based, clear topcoat that can protect interior wood projects like cabinets, doors and furniture. It’s safe for all wood species and cleans up easily with soap and water. Polycrylic is thinner than polyurethane, and you’ll need to apply several coats to achieve its protective benefits.
Polyurethane is another commonly used stain and paint sealer. This water- or oil-based protective sealer is thicker in application than polycrylic. Polyurethane is exceptionally durable, wear-resistant and normally easy to apply. Use this sealer for flooring or outside wood and paint finishes, as the thicker consistency makes it cling to large, flat surfaces. Use caution when applying oil-based polyurethane because it produces unpleasant fumes as it dries, requiring plenty of ventilation.
