Take Care of Your Hot Tub With Products From Lowe’s

Owning a hot tub makes it easier than ever to relax in soothing warm water, right in your own backyard. But to ensure that it stays in spa-like condition, you’ll need to understand basic care instructions, and that includes knowing which spa chemicals to use. Read on to find out more about maintaining your hot tub.

Chemical Care Instructions

There are a few best practices when it comes to caring for your hot tub. First up is water chemistry. You’ll need to make sure that your hot tub water is balanced, and that can be done by testing it once the tub is full. Checking it throughout the week to tweak pH and alkalinity levels is also recommended. If something is off, adding the right chemicals can fix the problem.

Chlorine or Bromine: Both are used to sanitize the water in your tub, ridding it of bacteria and other unpleasant contaminants. Chlorine works faster than bromine, but the latter is known to work longer, meaning you don’t need to replace it as often.

Shocker: The sanitizers above are designed to help keep your water clean and clear, but if you find that your water is still a little cloudy, adding shocker can fix the problem. It’s also a good idea to shock your hot tub if it’s been closed for a long period of time or it’s used frequently.

Clarifier: This chemical is also designed to help with cloudy water, though it’s not a long-term solution. If you’re still finding your water is not crystal clear, test it and add more of your sanitizer or shock it. A good clarifier will also ensure better filter performance, so you don’t have to worry about lots of bacteria recirculating into your tub.

Balancer: It’s important that the three most important chemicals — pH, calcium hardness and total alkalinity — stay at their ideal levels. That’s where balancer comes in, not only helping with water quality, but protecting the walls and equipment of your hot tub, too.

Other care tips include regularly cleaning the filter and replacing it when needed, cleaning the surfaces, waterline and plumbing of your hot tub spa, airing out the cover and adding fill water when water level gets low.

Seasonal Care

Whether you’re closing it up for the winter or opening it for spring, the hot tub care routine is relatively the same. With the exception of draining or filling the tub, you’ll still want to give it a good cleaning. Planning on using it through the winter? Continue regular maintenance and consider investing in a good cover to prevent heat loss.
