Use a Center Punch to Guide Drill Holes

Punches are useful for various projects, from metalworking to gunsmithing to household repairs. Use a center punch to mark holes you're planning to drill in metal to prevent the drill from traveling. Spring-loaded automatic center punches don't require a hammer so you can punch holes one-handed.

If you need to remove pins and rivets, a pin punch is a good tool for the job. Pin punches are available in various sizes, so you can use the appropriately sized punch for the pin or rivet you're removing. Use a ball-peen hammer to tap the end of the punch against the pin or rivet to gently remove it.

There are also rotating punches and handheld punches for stamping metal. If you're planning to punch larger, conduit-sized holes in steel, aluminum, fiberglass or other materials, you'll need a knockout punch set that's made to cut out holes up to three inches in diameter. These punchers are necessary tools for electricians but can be used in other applications as well.
