If you're laying a new tile floor, one of the most important tools for the job is a tile trowel. When laying tile, you'll need to spread a layer of thinset mortar to adhere the tiles to the tile membrane and subfloor. A trowel tool helps you create a smooth, flat surface to spread the mortar evenly and grooved edges to texture the mortar so the tiles adhere strongly.
Trowels are available in different sizes and with differently shaped notches. The size of tile you're installing will determine the type of grout trowel you need. If you're installing mosaic tiles, you'll want a V-notch trowel, as it'll leave the least amount of thinset behind. U-notch trowels are useful for tiles larger than 4 inches. Square notch trowels are also a great choice for any tile larger than 4 inches, and they leave behind just enough thinset to hold larger tiles.
You'll also need a flat finishing trowel to smooth over the grout used to fill in between the tiles. For a step-by-step look at installing a tile floor, see our guide — How To Lay Tile: DIY Floor Tile Installation.
