Complete your new tile floor or backsplash with the appropriate grout float. A float is a grouting tool that compresses grout into the gaps between the tiles and smoothes it level. They've got rounded edges that prevent disfiguring the grout accidentally.
The type of tile float you need for your project depends on the type of tile and grout you're using. Most float pads are made of rubber or another similar material, and they come in various levels of elasticity so you can choose the right firmness for your project. Choose a soft tile float for glass tile or tile that'll scratch easily. Floats with medium elasticity are appropriate for most tile projects, and hard floats work best if you're using coarse grout and stone or rough tile.
If you're laying a tile floor and wall, such as in a walk-in shower, grout the walls first to avoid misaligning the floor tiles. For step-by-step tips for laying tile, see our guide — How to Lay Tile: DIY Floor Tile Installation.
