Before you begin any stain refresh project, it’s important to determine if the existing stain is oil- or latex-based so you can buy the same type for your new stain. Put a bit of rubbing alcohol or fingernail polish remover on a cotton ball or paper towel and rub the area you’re planning to stain. If the color comes off, the existing stain is latex based. If the color doesn’t come off, the existing stain is oil based. Match your new stain type to your existing stain type to help ensure proper compatibility and performance.
Once you determine the type of stain you need, choose your stain transparency level. Transparency refers to the level of woodgrain you’ll see through the stain. If you’re staining a new deck, for example, choose a clear, transparent or semi-transparent deck stain. If you’re staining an older deck, consider a solid or semi-solid option, like semi-solid Cabot® stain.
