How to Choose: THHN vs. THWN Wire

Thermoplastic high-heat nylon coated wire (THHN wire) is an electrical wire used in dry to damp locations and can withstand temperatures up to 194 degrees Fahrenheit, or 90 degrees Celsius. THHN is mainly used in homes and commercial structures for connecting branch circuits and appliances.

Thermoplastic heat and water-resistant wire (THWN wire) is useful for both wet and dry applications and can withstand temperatures up to 167 degrees Fahrenheit, or 75 degrees Celsius. THWN is like THHN but able to handle more severe environments without additional insulation. Similarly, THWN-2 wire has the advantage of a higher temperature rating. It can withstand heat up to 194 degrees Fahrenheit, or 90 degrees Celsius.

When comparing THHN versus THWN wires, your decision may depend on where you plan to use the wire you buy. THHN is more heat-resistant than THWN, and THWN is more moisture-resistant.

In addition to these common wire types, there’s thermoplastic flexible fixture nylon wire, or TFFN wire This option is a single-stranded copper conductor. It’s similar to THHN in its ratings and its oil and gas resistance. But TFFN is available only in 16 or 18 American wire gauge (AWG).
