Concrete Bonding Agents and Other Masonry Additives

When you’re building a concrete wall or working on another masonry project, using a high-quality bonding agent can help to ensure strong adhesion through deep freezes and blazing heat waves. At Lowe’s, we offer first-rate concrete bonding agents, mix accelerators and fortifiers to make your hardscape or wall tough enough to last for years.

Use a concrete fortifier with portland cement-based patching materials, stucco, thin-set mortars and grouts to increase bonding strength and improve resistance to water damage from rain, sprinklers, snow, mist or fog. You can add a fortifier to your mixture or apply it with a roller, brush or sprayer.

If your project is on a tight schedule, you may wish to add a concrete accelerator to reduce the set time that portland cement-based products need without compromising performance. Still not sure which product you need? Be sure to check out our Masonry and Cement Products Buying Guide, which is full of information about the differences between concrete mixes, sand mixes, cement and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s a masonry bonding agent?

A: A masonry bonding agent, which people also call a concrete bonding agent, is the adhesive that secures two or more pieces of masonry or concrete together. The agent can be synthetic or natural. It bonds the pieces together so that they effectively become one piece.

Q: How do you apply a concrete bonding agent?

A: To apply a concrete bonding agent, start by cleaning the surfaces of your concrete or masonry, removing any dirt, stains or debris. Next, prepare the agent according to the instructions that come with the agent. Then, spread the prepared agent evenly on the surface with a brush, rag or sponge. After you apply the agent — and before it starts to dry — place the second piece of concrete or masonry on top firmly. Let it set and remove any excess agent with a rag or trowel.

Q: What’s an additive in concrete?

A: An additive is a chemical or compound that you add to a concrete mix to improve its performance. For example, an additive might help concrete to set faster or harden to a stronger degree. Examples of additives include accelerants, set retarders and air entrainments, among others.
