A ceiling tile grid system is essential to create a drop down ceiling that’s below the main structural ceiling — but what exactly are ceiling tile grids? Ceiling tile grids serve as the frames for suspended ceilings, which some people call drop ceilings, that use tiles. The grid system hangs from the main structural ceiling and supports the ceiling tiles, creating a finished look in the space. Using this type of system also hides electrical wiring or pipes but keeps them accessible for when they need repair.
Ceiling tile grid systems use beams and cross tees that come in sturdy galvanized steel to create the grid that supports the ceiling tiles. These pieces can be cut to fit your space, but a standard ceiling grid includes 15/16-inch strips to support either 2-foot-by-2-foot or 2-foot-by-4-foot ceiling tiles. Learn more about these systems by checking out our Ceiling Cover Buying Guide. To create a grid for a ceiling tile installation, you hang a ceiling tile grid to support the tiles. Suspend the grid from the existing ceiling or beams and fasten it to the wall. Your grid system will include a main beam, cross tees and wall moulding to provide adequate support for the tiles. Tiles fit between the grid pieces to complete the ceiling. You can purchase an entire system or individual components, depending on your needs. The grids are available in several finishes — including white, black and tan — so if you have black ceiling tile you can choose a black grid system to coordinate with your ceiling tile color. You can add decorative trim to the installation as well, to give it a polished look.
