What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise this finish for its durability and weather resistance on outdoor wood, with most reporting excellent results when applied in multiple coats. Many highlight the beautiful, protective finish that resists UV rays and moisture. However, some note the clear satin finish appears glossy, and a few report it yellowed or darkened white paint. Several mention extended drying times and occasional bubbles, while a small group experienced premature finish failure. Despite these drawbacks, most customers remain satisfied and willing to repurchase.

Patience Yields Best Results
6 hours is the minimum drying time for sanding/recoating. I counsel patience. 12 - 24 hours is what I have always followed and never had a problem. I usually apply 5 coats (which may be extreme). The final finish is spectacular, especially after curing for a minimum of 48 hours. If you're in a hurry and don't have the luxury of time use the Minwax water-based varnish. I'm an ol' guy have used spar varnish for the past 30 years and it's never let me down..

Changed product
I have been using this for about 20 years. It's obvious the formula changed. I will not longer use it due to the finish drys uneven, looks terrible.

Terrible product. A waste of time and money.
Last winter we removed several exterior hatches from our boat. We sanded the old finish completely off of the teak. We then applied 3 coats of the Spar Urethane. This was a big mistake. When spring came we remounted the hatches and they looked great. Unfortunately within a few weeks the finish started to fail. By the end of teh summer they looked terrible as the finish was completely gone in some places and bleached looking in others. The wood looked as if it hadn't been cared for in, literally,...

Might as well left it unfinished!!
I spent days planing and sanding beautiful yellow cedar wood to make a new picnic table for the back yard. After hours of preparation and cleaning I decided on the “best” oil based product to protect my investment. I chose the spar varnish that I am writing this review on gave it 2 coats and followed all instructions. It took 3 months or so for my beautiful table to look like crap!! I will never use this product again as now I have to refinish the entire thing.
