This 1894 painting by Edvard Munch was part of the same series as his most famous work, The Scream. The color palette, composition, and setting are all similar, featuring a slanting footbridge overlaid on a hellish depiction of the Oslo Fjord. Overall though, this work is subtler in both subject matter and style. While The Scream is a bright and piercing vision of terrible isolation, Anxiety shows the unsettling stoicism of a group. Their gaunt and expressionless faces sit atop the undefined mass of black garments, filling the bridge in a seemingly endless procession reminiscent of a funeral. Typical of Munch, it is rather gloomy, though the emotions expressed are ones common to most if not all people at times.
