Do not recessed this cabinet - unfinished sides will be exposed
I would give this product a zero if it was an option. I just had a professional contractor install two of these cabinets and I may take them out and go with something else knowing I will be out the money. The description says they can be recessed. If you recess the cabinets then you are left with exposed grey plastic insides that show on both sides of the medicine cabinet and look horrible as they are not meant to be seen. Beautiful, high quality, and reasonably priced.
The medicine cabinets are beautiful. Very well made, high quality. The inside is mirrored on both the back and also the back of the door. The arched door is classy and looks wonderful in our bathroom. Fairly easy to hang, we hung ours surface mounted, and the mirror panels on the outside look great, they really finish the look. Doors a bit tricky to adjust. Glass shelves are thick and able to hold items securely. Couldn't be happier!

Mirror Edge Defect
I also have a peeling/rust-like defect along the lower edge of my medicine cabinet. Although it is a slight defect, it is an obvious defect that is cause for a replacement. Very disappointed coming from a Kohler product.
