Stopper plug is too short

My tub, a Sterling Ensemble, requires a 13 1/8" depth drain according to the instructions. This drain supposedly fits up to 14". The drain itself does fit, BUT the stopper rod isn't long enough. Adjusted to the last thread on the rod only slows down the water escaping.
