After only 18 months, the heat pump failed (no warning, no error codes), and we had to limp it along in full resistance mode. Thank goodness we didn't pay for installation, because AO Smith didn't offer anything for labor. And we had to drain it and take the old water heater back to Lowes. I asked the manufacturer if they still make this model and are still selling it, knowing that is has a terrible failure rate, and the person I spoke to said, yes, we are and we know. Compressor failed after one year

I had high hopes for this hybrid hot water heater since Consumer Reports & Good Housekeeping gave it a good review, and I was able to purchase it with a 15% off coupon from Lowe's. Unfortunately, the heat pump part of the unit stopped working after a year. A.O. Smith sent 2 new control panels (one of which did not work) and one set of control cables. Worst Appliance Ever

It was months after installation getting this thing to work. Had to fight with Lowe's, many calls to the manufacturer... replaced the first unit, second one kept throwing errors. A total nightmare to go months without a hot shower. Finally get it working, and it is the LOUDEST HOT WATER HEATER.

My Hybrid Experience

Would Not Recommend

Bought a hybrid to be efficient and climate friendly. But the hybrid stopped working 2.5 years later. My home inspection guy had the same experience for two heaters. Save yourself the money and trouble and buy an electric or gas only. The warranty makes me pay 2k for labor to fix what is a manufacturer issue.

I had this water heater installed through Lowe’s Project Services on 9/23/2025. Less than a year later, I experienced a major issue and contacted A. O. Smith customer support. After troubleshooting, they determined that the compressor had failed and that the unit needed to be replaced. What was most frustrating was how the warranty was handled. Writing this review to help a future consumer. I urge those reading this to consider another manufacturer. My experience with this product and AO smith's services have been unacceptable (I have the 80 gallon model). In less than three years, both my control panel and compressor have failed - forcing me to pay for significant repair bills and higher utilities (with the compressor failure, the unit has to run on backup elements that are far less efficient.)
