How to Measure for Outdoor Furniture Covers

Use flexible tape to measure the width of your sofa from the outer edge of one armrest to the outer edge of the opposite armrest. This horizontal measurement ensures that the cover will fully protect your sofa.

Measure the depth by placing the tape at the front edge of the seat cushion and extending it straight back to the furthest part of the backrest. Include attached pillow backs in this measurement.

Measure the sofa's height from the ground up to the highest point of the backrest. If your sofa has legs, measure from the ground to the seat and then add the seat height separately to capture the full height of the sofa.

If your sofa has thick cushions, add the thickness of the cushions to your total depth and height measurements. This helps ensure that the cover will comfortably fit over both the sofa and the cushions.

Once you’ve taken all your measurements, write them down clearly. Double-check them to avoid errors.

For chairs, measure the width from one armrest to the other. Ensure to include any additional parts extending beyond the main frame, such as cushions or armrest extensions. For tables, measure the width across the widest part of the table’s surface.

For chairs, measure the depth from the front edge of the seat to the back, including any cushions. For tables, measure the depth from one edge to the other. This dimension captures the length of the table.

For chairs, measure the height from the ground to the top of the backrest. If the chairs have legs, include the height from the ground to the seat and the backrest height.

For tables, measure the height from the ground to the highest point of the table’s surface. Ensure you include any decorative tops or parts that could extend the height.

If your patio furniture has unusual shapes, take multiple measurements. Measure at the widest and deepest points to ensure complete coverage.

Make sure to include any extended parts, such as umbrella holes, curved arms or chair recliners, in your measurements. These features might require you to add extra inches to ensure the cover fits well.

After measuring each piece, add 1-2 inches to each dimension. This extra buffer makes it easier to fit the cover and allows for some flexibility in the fabric, which is especially helpful if you live in a region with harsh weather conditions.

After measuring all your patio furniture, write down the measurements. Compare these measurements with the size charts provided by the cover manufacturer to ensure you’re selecting the right size.
