Rattan vs. Wicker Outdoor Furniture

When talking about furniture, rattan and wicker are often thought of as the same thing. But the two have distinct differences as to which to choose. Our guide will show you the variances of each and which would be the best choice for your home or patio.

What is Rattan?

Natural rattan is a type of material made from several species of palm trees. Most of the world's supply of rattan comes from Indonesia and southern Asia. Rattan is more durable than bamboo thanks to its denser structure. However, it isn’t water resistant and therefore is better suited for indoor use. Rattan can also be painted or stained to update your look or match other casual furniture that you may have. 

Most rattan outdoor furniture today is a synthetic material that is exceptionally durable and is also weather resistant, making it an extremely popular and solid choice for patio use. With proper care, this synthetic material will look good for many seasons to come.

What is Cane?

Cane is the bark of the rattan vine and is used in binding pieces together. Noted for its strength despite the thin texture, it can naturally deter messes and spills. Caning is used in furniture for both design and strength, such as frame siding and seat bottoms for chairs. It can also be used in decorative baskets and mats.

What is Wicker?

Often used interchangeably in conversation, rattan and wicker are not the same. As mentioned above, rattan is a material used to make furniture and other items. Wicker is actually a method of weaving that goes back to ancient Egypt. As materials like rattan were imported into Europe from Asia, it became the preferred choice for doing wicker weaving. Nowadays, you can find wicker work in furniture along with craftwork like basketmaking. For wicker patio furniture, the weaving materials are sturdy resin and vinyl for longevity and the ability to stand up to all types of weather.

Rattan or Wicker? What Do I Choose?

Deciding which type of furniture to choose rests largely on where you are going to place it. If you are going to use the pieces indoors, then true rattan furniture is a great option. Classic designs and long-lasting durability make rattan a traditional choice. Cleaning interior rattan is simple with a soft brush and a vacuum to remove any dust and debris.

If you are looking for something to go outside, or in an open air setting, then synthetic wicker is the best choice. Weather-resistant resin can tolerate the temperature, sun rays and precipitation well and keep its good looks season after season. Upkeep is easy with a simple hosing down with water or an outdoor cleaner for any stains and streaks.
