Paint the Bucket

Step 1

Wash the bucket with a grease-dissolving detergent and dry thoroughly. Apply painter’s tape to mask off the center band around the bucket. Press the tape firmly against the metal with your fingernail.

Step 2

Spray on two coats of paint in the color of your choice (Hacienda Tile shown).

Step 3

While the paint dries, set a beam compass or use a pencil, nail, and string to draw an 18-5/8-inch-diameter circle on a piece of flooring underlayment. Cut out the circle.

Good to Know

We used a scrap of flooring underlayment for the seat, but you can also use carpet padding, a scrap of low-pile carpet, or a thin carpet runner usually sold by the yard. The surface just needs to be flat and dense enough to hold paint.

Stamp the Seat Pad

Step 1

Cut a 16-in plywood square (or have a Lowe’s associate cut one in the store) and mark lines diagonally between the corners.

Step 2

Download the Seat Stamp Pattern Guide and apply the round and oval pads as shown.

Step 3

Large and small stamps

Use a lightly loaded foam paint roller to apply paint in the color of your choice (Gentle Wave shown) to the tops of the felt pads. Place the round seat pad on a flat work surface, center the stamp over the seat pad, and carefully lower the stamp on the pad. Gently lift off the stamp to reveal the design.

Step 4

Allow the paint to dry overnight before using.

Bonus: Stamp a Folding Seat

Step 1

Refer to the instructions for making a folding stool and cut the wood pieces to size. Then cut and sew the canvas seat.

Step 2

From a scrap board or piece of plywood, cut a piece 7-1/4 inches square. (A Lowe’s associate can also do this in the store.) Draw diagonal lines between the corners to find the center.

Step 3

Download the Small Snowflake Stamp Pattern Guide and attach the round and oval felt pads as shown. Repeat Step 3 from the previous section to stamp the canvas seat in the paint color of your choice (Gentle Wave shown).
