Step 1

Have a Lowe's associate cut two 18-1/2-in x 15-1/2-in plywood panels. Sand both panels to 180-grit and wipe clean. Prime and paint both panels the background color of your choice (shown in Ultra White).

Step 2

Cut each square dowel in half and sand the ends smooth. Arrange the dowels on one of the plywood panels in the pattern of your choice (or use the photos as a general guide). Use the same width of dowel on rows with two pieces.

Good to Know

For the moment, ignore the overhanging parts of the dowels. You'll use the cut-off pieces later for the second panel.

Step 3

After you arrange all the dowels on the panel, dab one of the three paint colors on each dowel to indicate the colors you'll apply later.

Good to Know

For the green panel, we used Lovely Green, Mountain Botanical, and Can't Miss Lime. The other panel combines Gold Abundance, Field of Daisies, and Golden Promise. If you prefer another combination, pick three colors you like that are next to each other on a paint chip card.

Step 4

Mark where to cut the dowels and, on the underside of each dowel, mark the row number and whether short pieces will go on the left or right. Cut the dowels to length and sand the ends smooth.

Step 5

Paint the unlabeled sides and ends of each dowel. After they dry, reposition the dowels on the panel. Working from the top down, glue each dowel in place and apply weight or clamps to hold them in position.

Step 6

Using the leftover dowel pieces plus full-length pieces, repeat with another set of colors for the second panel. Attach centered wall hangers on the back to hang them or rest the panels on a shelf.
