Step 1

Use pliers to remove the threaded mounting screw from the end of the leg. Fill the hole with wood putty and sand smooth if you plan to paint the holder.

Step 2

Draw a fine pencil line centered down the length of one face on the leg. Mark seven dots 1 inch apart and 1 inch from each end.

Step 3

Place tape flags 1 inch up from the tips of your drill bits, and drill 1-inch-deep holes to fit the sizes of the pencils and pens you’ll store. For example, most pencils fit in a 5/16-inch-diameter hole.

Good to Know

If your bits come in a case with individual holes of different sizes for each bit, you can tell what size holes your pens and pencils need by seeing how they fit different holes in the case. If it’s a snug fit, choose the next bit size up in diameter.

Step 4

Sand the holder and wipe clean. Then apply your choice of finishes.
