You can paint a floral design by hand or use the Medium Bloomers stencil set (#7013M) for $49.95 plus shipping from Royal Design Studio. The set includes a 13-inch x 13-inch and a 10-inch x 10-inch stencil. The instructions below explain how to create the design using stencils.

Step 1

Spray the back of the stencil with a repositionable adhesive. Then press the stencil firmly against the mat where you want it and mask off areas you want to protect.

Good to Know

If you don’t have a roll of kraft paper handy to mask off the mat, use paper grocery bags or at least two layers of newspaper.

Step 2

Holding the spray-paint can directly above the stencil, apply two or more light coats to the mat. Remove the stencil after the final coat dries.

Good to Know

Avoid spraying at an angle to prevent paint from getting under the stencil edges.

Step 3

Position the stencil in the next location you want to paint. Where the flowers overlap, lay the stencil on the existing painted flower and mask off the painted design where it’s covered by the stencil. Then paint this flower as you did above.

Step 4

After the final flower is painted, allow the mat to dry overnight before using.
