Decorate a Small Patio or Deck

Brought to you by Lowe's Creative Ideas

The right furniture, decor, and plants can help you get big enjoyment out of a small outdoor space.

Furnished balcony with outdoor accessories.

Compact Impact

We transformed this balcony using ideas you can easily apply to a small patio or other outdoor space. The first step was choosing properly scaled allen + roth™ furniture -- like this modest-size side table (#609685) paired with a loveseat and coffee table set (#609574). Their warm brown hues contrast with bright accents, including colorful resin pots (#606094, #606095, #606097, #606100, #606104) and a vibrant red plant stand (#606032).

Palette Pizzazz

Striped pillows (#605479) soften the space’s hard edges and add dramatic dashes of color. They also provide the lively palette we used to select other items -- including an allen + roth™ striped area rug (#505168) and the paint colors applied to the planter blocks on the wall. Check out these handy tips for maintaining outdoor furniture.

Pentas blooms

Burst of Blooms

We chose plants that provide a soothing green backdrop and subtle hints of color. Soft-pink pentas blooms complement our colorful decor but don’t compete with it.

Majesty palm frond.

Friendly Fronds

The leaves of a majesty palm allow plenty of natural light through and recall the stripes of the rug and pillows.

Feathergrass and succulents in a tabletop planter.

Best-Laid Plants

Delicate feathergrass foliage shares space on a side table with low-maintenance jade and other succulents.

Hanging blocks holding air plants.

Building Blocks

Add wow to a wall with these painted planter blocks. Built from poplar with drilled holes for air plants (which require no soil), they form a customizable art display you can hang inside or out.

Planter tray with succulents.

Center of Attention

With its striking array of succulent plants, this centerpiece is also a conversation piece. Just spray-paint a terra-cotta saucer (#94461) in Valspar Dark Night. Fill it with soil and plants, then top with pebbles.

Wall-mounted serving station with painted flower art panel.

Open Bar

Serve with verve using a wall-mounted serving station featuring a drop-down door that doubles as a counter. When closed, the painted flower design matches the DIY wall art mounted above it -- which we flanked with galvanized steel wall lights (#190827, model #AAW1691STEEL).
