Follow the manufacturer's instructions to position and cut the opening to install the pet door. Then thoroughly clean the door and let dry. Print and assemble the pet door stencil or use it as a guide for taping off the shape.
You can also use a combination of tape for the straight lines and parts of the stencil for curves, such as the pediment at the top. To fit the design to pet doors of different sizes, shrink or enlarge the stencil as needed.
Tape off the base of the design. Using a small roller, apply two coats of paint (Sea Exposure shown) to the area within the stencil. Remove the tape and let dry thoroughly before moving to the next step.
Just because the paint feels dry to the touch doesn't mean it has dried beneath the surface. Wait for it to dry thoroughly, or the tape you apply in the next step could pull off the paint.
Tape off the area around the base and surrounding the cut-out for the pet door. Allow a border at least 1/2-inch wide around the pet door after you install it. Then apply a complementary paint color (Purple Davenport shown).
Carefully remove the tape and clean up any uneven edges as needed. Install the door according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Some pet doors come with a slide-in panel to seal the door. If you like, paint the panel a matching or complementary color.
