Step 1

Determine the locations where you want to install the hangers and mark them on the wall with painter’s tape. Using an electronic stud finder, determine which ones are over a wall stud. Adjust the locations slightly to center the hanger over the stud as needed. Then mark any locations that will require a toggle-bolt drywall anchor.

Good to Know

For hangers not mounted in wall studs, avoid placing them closer than 16 inches together to prevent possible drywall damage.

Step 2

Use pliers to remove the existing hardware from a wooden leg or foot. In that hole, attach a dowel screw for hangers to be screwed into a wall stud, or add a hanger bolt for hangers to be screwed into a toggle-bolt wall anchor.

Step 3

Apply at least two coats of the paint of your choice and let dry overnight before using.

Step 4

Screw the hanger into the wall stud or drywall anchor. Repeat for the remaining hangers.

Step 5

Shelf bracket holders

For an alternative to wooden legs and feet, add carved shelf brackets (#225705, 163257).

Step 6

To complement your wall hangers and provide a safe place for wet shoes, partially fill a sealed water-heater pan (#317904) with pea gravel (#92130) and position it below the hangers.
