Look for the tabs inside the rim of the storage tote—about 4-1/2 inches from the ends—and apply pieces of painter’s tape to the outside of the tote directly below the tabs. At the four tabs, measure down from the top rim 1-3/4 inches and mark the tape.
In addition to being easier to mark than the plastic tote, painter’s tape will help keep the bit from slipping as you drill.
At each marked location, drill a 5/16-inch hole through the plastic. Remove the tape.
Thread two 5/16-inch nuts on each rod until they’re about 4 inches from the ends. Add a fender washer to slide against both nuts. Then insert the threaded rods through the holes in the tote from the inside and center them.
Slide a fender washer on each end of a threaded rod and add nuts to hold them in place. Then turn the inside nuts and washers until they press firmly against the insides of the tote without distorting its shape. Use an adjustable wrench (two wrenches work even better) and tighten the nuts snug against the inside and outside of the tote. Repeat for the other threaded rod. Now you’re ready to hang your ornaments in the roughly 4-1/2 inches between the top of the rod and bottom of the tote. Keep them dust-free by snapping the lid on the tote when you’re done.
