South Central Gardening: Fruit Trees

Brought to you by Lowe's Creative Ideas

Small trees look lovely. They add structure, texture and fit about anywhere. To commemorate a birth, a small tree is ideal. As the child grows so does the tree.

Spring greets winter-weary gardeners with soft-pink peach blooms.

I've found beautiful trees and shrubs - from the purely ornamental to the fruit-bearing - year after year at my local Lowe's. My favorite dwarf ornamental trees are peaches such as this Flordawon Dwarf Peach tree which grow so well in the South.

Peach trees bloom extravagantly in spring and then reward me with fruit come summer. Plus their small size makes them the perfect fit, and you only need one because most cultivars are self-fertile. Even if the birds get to the fruit before me, I don't mind so much because I tell myself I'll pay the fare to have them serenade me as I garden.

So when making a memory, you can't go wrong with a small, ornamental tree as a gift. If your friend or family member isn't much of a gardener, offer to plant the tree for them in a spot they pick. As the tree grows, they will remember your gift long after others they received, and every year it blooms, they will think of you.
