The best location for your drying rack is in a dark, dry place such as an attic or basement with good ventilation. Sunlight can cause herb fragrance and flavor to deteriorate.
Use needle-nose pliers to remove the staples attaching the plastic hinge to the trellis, separating it into two pieces.
For an optional finish, apply the stain of your choice (American Walnut shown) and let dry.
To suspend the rack, drive two screw eyes, spaced the distance between the outside slats of the rack, into a ceiling or joist. Cut four pieces of sisal rope to suit the mounting height of the rack and tie them to the screw eyes. Then tie the other ends to the rack where the short and long pieces intersect. For a decorative effect, you can wrap the connection with rope.
To prepare freshly cut herbs for drying, cut them in the morning while their moisture level is high. Use twine to hang the herbs in bundles of three to six branches each. Hang each bundle upside down until the plants are brittle for cooking use or slightly moist for sachets or other craft uses.
