Step 1

Choose a font you like on your computer and print out names for the place markers in a type size that fits within the recess of the caster cups. Cover the back of the pattern with graphite from a pencil -- or use transfer paper -- and trace over the lettering to transfer it to the caster cups.

Step 2

Pencil in the lines of any additional pattern you want to add. Use the woodburning tool to follow the letters and pattern lines until you finish the design. Experiment with different woodburning tips on scrap wood to customize each place marker.

Step 3

Use artist’s brushes to apply colored stains. After the stains dry, spray on two coats of clear semigloss finish.
