Project Resources

Step 1

Unroll and cut two 15-inch lengths of hardware cloth and flatten each section.  Create a heart design of your own or download the Wire Mesh Heart Layout Guide. Follow the pattern to cut out a heart shape, leaving prongs of wire around the outside edges. Then use that heart to cut an identical second heart.

Good to Know

Cut wire ends can be sharp. If necessary, wear leather work gloves when handling hardware cloth.

Step 2

Tie together wire mesh heart halves.

Lay the two wire hearts on top of each other and begin tying them together with jute rope wrapped around the outside wires. Each loop will span two uncut wires for a 1/2-inch-wide jute band around the edge. Continue wrapping jute until you join about three-quarters of the outside edge.

Step 3

Add stones to the wire-mesh heart.

Wash about a third of a bag of polished stones and dry them thoroughly. In the opening, begin inserting polished stones. Push them to the outside edges of the heart shape, and add enough to make the center thicker than the edges.

Step 4

After inserting enough stones to complete the heart shape, finish tying the remaining edges together.

Step 5

Hang the finished heart using the wire mesh in back as a hanger, or add a hanging loop of jute rope.
