Select a mix of ornaments and sort them according to size, shape, and color. Arrange them in a tree shape on a flat surface such as a large table or on the floor. Adjust the spacing along each row to suit the type of ornaments and note the length of any string or ribbons used to hang them. Then measure from the top ornament to the bottom of the lowest row to make sure there’s available wall space.
Use a level to fasten a vertical strip of painter’s tape to the wall to use as your center -- you’ll use one side of the tape as your guide, not the center. Measure just far enough off the floor for the bottom row to hang freely and mark the tape. With the carpenter’s square and straightedge, mark the hook locations along the wall. Lightly press the hooks in place and hang the ornaments. Once they’re in an arrangement you like, press the hooks firmly against the wall.
Measure up from the bottom row for the next one. Mark the hook locations and hang the ornaments as you did before. Repeat for remaining rows of ornaments using a combination of hooks for the ornaments that can hang and adhesive strips for ones without a string or ribbon.
At the bottom, add a large vertical decoration, such as this house (#675017), to mimic the trunk of the tree.
Remove the tape guide after you add the final ornament. We used the following decorations: at the top, a knitted ball ornament (#677406); second row, green trees (#677400); third row, red paper birds and red birdhouses, (#677415); fourth row, mice (#677407) and small owls (#677408); fifth row, small steel hanging birdhouses (#675016) and small glittery houses (#675018); sixth row, large owls (#674145) and red trees (#675019); seventh row, snowflakes (#677414); and bottom row, penguins (#677410) and knitted ball ornaments.
