Easy Fireplace & Mantel Makeover: Brick-to-Tile Design

Brought to you by Lowe's Creative Ideas

A $633 floor-to-ceiling makeover lets a dated fireplace wall reclaim its starring role.

Before We Began

This drab fireplace had lost its luster. Dated brick and a worn wood mantel were flanked by crammed bookshelves. Instead of a focal point and cozy gathering spot, the fireplace had become tired and unwelcoming.

Updated Tile

Porcelain tile (#486466) laid in a stacked pattern adds sleek lines to the surround. Extending the tile to the ceiling creates height and draws the eye. Much as you’d update hardware, a new fireplace door (#358248) delivers an on-trend finish and cleaner lines to the masonry fireplace. A sturdy, streamlined mantel face extends from wall to wall.

Trim It Out

Top the room with detailed moulding (#31256—moulding availability varies by store) at the ceiling to give the entire space, as well as the updated fireplace and shelves, an integrated look.

Shelf Space

Reduce the number of shelves to increase the display area. Space above the top shelves accommodates wall art.

Shades of blue on a side wall and behind the white shelves.

Dull to Dazzling Paint

The wall peeking through shelving creates a wonderful opportunity to surprise with color. Behind the shelves, soft blue (Niagara Blue, #CI 21) plays off the bolder shade on the adjacent walls (La Fonda Villa Fountain, #5002-4B) for subtle contrast.

Shelf decorations and books.

Finish with Flair

Choose your big visuals first, such as a large print over the firebox, then fill in the rest. Divide book groupings using vases, medallions, and accents. Lay books on their sides to break things up.
