Step 1

Have a Lowe's associate cut your plywood in half; it should measure 2' x 2'.

Step 2

Lightly sand the top and edges. Vacuum or wipe clean.

Step 3

Stain plywood with a staining pad, following directions on the can. Allow to dry overnight.

Step 4

Place strips of 1-1/2" painter's tape onto the plywood for the tree trunks and 1" tape for the branches, making up the tree composition as you go. You can use a crafts knife to cut and remove some of the tape to refine the trunk and branch shapes. Make sure the tape adheres tightly so you'll get clean lines when you paint.

Good to Know

You could also use a self-healing mat to lay out and trim your trees, then transfer them to the plywood and burnish the edges.

Step 5

Paint or stain the entire board using a 3" brush.

Step 6

Minwax stain in Golden Oak and Ebony

Let dry; remove the tape. Get a different look using Minwax stain in Golden Oak and Ebony.
