Plan Your Wreath Design

Whether your wreath comes with lights or pinecones already in place, there’s more you can do to make it shine:

Coordinate colors. For example, choose ornaments to complement your tree if it’s in the same space.

Choose a theme such as snowflakes or even a child’s first Christmas.

Mix it up with a combination of ornaments, picks, and ribbons. Instead of scattering decorations evenly around a wreath, create attention-getting clusters of ornaments for bursts of color and shine. A tightly packed cluster of small ornaments can give you the same visual impact as one large ornament to balance an arrangement.

Gem Tones Wreath

Christmas wreath with birds and colorful ornaments.

Creativity takes flight on this colorful wreath with its flock of ornamental birds.

How to Make It:

To capture glitter or loose needles, lay a canvas drop cloth or long strip of kraft paper on your work surface. For this wreath (and the others), first arrange ornaments in a circle on a flat surface as they’ll be arranged on the wreath. We grouped the three birds on one side and balanced them with a cluster of ornaments on the other side. First attach the largest ornaments and birds to your wreath with floral wire by twisting the ends of the wire around the wreath frame or branches — similar to tightening a twist tie around a bread wrapper. Trim off the surplus wire and push the sharp end into the wreath. As space allows, wire medium and small ornaments to the wreath followed by picks. To integrate the partially buried branches, we positioned them to resemble perches for the birds.

Warm and Woodsy Wreath

Natural-theme holiday wreath with jute ribbon.

Combine subtle, natural additions with the green of a Christmas wreath for a woodsy look.

How to Make It:

Tie one end of the jute ribbon to the back of the wreath and loosely wrap the strands around the wreath. After the final wrap, tie the other end of the ribbon to the back. Rather than a bow, fabric flower picks wired in a cluster become the focus. Then fasten antler picks to the wreath in loose clusters — some should extend a few inches past the outer edge of the wreath. Fill in with berry and pinecone picks.

Shopping List:

  • Ribbon, #585718
  • Gold poinsettia picks, #585833
  • Antler picks, #677470

Sophisticated Sparkle Wreath

Red and gold holiday wreath hung from a mirror.

Red and metallic-finish decorations transform a live or artificial wreath into an elegant circle of Christmas beauty.

How to Make It:

First wire the three large red ornaments evenly spaced around the wreath. Add the red and gold ornaments, varying the number to avoid a symmetrical arrangement. Evenly distribute medium-size ornaments and picks with berries, pinecones, and glitter sprays with the look of pine needles. The decorations shown complement each other in both texture and color. To hang the finished wreath, loop a wide ribbon through the opening and hang it from the ribbon.

Shopping List:

  • Textured round red ornaments, pack of 4, #674197
  • Fluted metallic ornaments, pack of 4, #674174
  • Red and gold ornament assortment, pack of 6, #674150
  • Red berry picks, #585820

Whimsical Holiday Wreath

Whimsical holiday wreath with owl decoration.

For a little Christmas whimsy, decorate a real or artificial holiday wreath with colorful, fun ornaments in a variety of shapes and materials.

How to Make It:

Begin by wiring the owl ornament centered at the bottom using the place where the scarf is attached at the back. Next, wire the largest ornaments — the fabric balls — to the wreath for a balanced layout. Then add the snowflakes to help offset the position of the fabric balls.

Fill in the remaining spaces with medium-size and small ornaments. For a decorative hanger, cut a 2-foot piece of wide, colorful ribbon, loop the ribbon through the wreath, and use that to hang the wreath.

Shopping List:

  • Fabric ornaments, set of 4, #677406
  • Plush owl ornament, #674145
  • Ribbon, #585718
  • Blue and red snowflake ornaments, set of 4, #677414
  • Miniature ornaments, assorted colors, pack of 24, #674096
  • Assorted ornaments, #674098, #675021, #674098
