When ordering custom doors to use as headboards, you can match the door height to the width of your mattress. Common mattress widths are: Twin, 39 inches; double, 54 inches; queen (shown), 60 inches; king, 76 inches; California king, 72 inches. Add overhangs to these widths to suit your preferences.
Paint the door a base color (Ultra White shown) and let dry.
Apply strips of tape from top to bottom or edge to edge in the pattern of your choice. You can remove and replace tape as needed. Press the edges of the tape firmly against the door.
Paint the door a contrasting color (Stone Mason Gray shown) and let dry. Then remove the tape to reveal the base color.
Fasten two wall hangers to the back of the headboard at opposite ends near the top.
On a hollow-core door, there are solid-wood strips along both long edges that will hold screw threads better than the hollow center.
Center and level the headboard above the bed, and mark the wall hanger locations. Add wall anchors to locations not over a wall stud. Then screw the remaining pieces of the hanger to the wall and hang the headboard.
