How to Seed a New Lawn
Dig or till the ground to a 3-inch depth. Rake to remove clods and smooth out the surface. Remember that you’re establishing a finished grade, so include any contours needed for drainage.
Add compost, topsoil and starter fertilizer and then work them into the soil.
Spread the grass seed at the rate indicated on the packaging. To ensure even coverage, sow half of the seed in one direction and the other half in a different direction to make a crisscross pattern.

Rake the entire area again to cover the seeds with a small amount of soil. Mulch with a weed-free straw, such as wheat straw, or use an erosion control blanket to prevent the seed from blowing or washing away.
Water frequently to keep the seeds moist (don’t saturate). Cut watering back to once a day when the grass reaches about 1 inch in height.
Mow when the grass reaches 2-1/2 to 3 inches. After you’ve mown three times, use a regular watering schedule of 1 inch per week. After mowing a minimum of four times, apply a crabgrass control product to stop the germination of unsightly crabgrass.

What Customers Are Saying
The Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix is generally an effective product that delivers good results. The grass seed germinates quickly, grows into a thick, lush lawn suitable for both sunny and shady areas, and performs well in challenging conditions. The "water smart" coating helps retain moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering. The grass has a rich, dark green color and blends seamlessly with existing lawns. While some customers experienced issues with germination, the majority were satisfied with the quality and results of the product.

Expired seed at Lowe's Lancaster buy elsewhere
I pointed out to service desk and employees 4x times this year that the Sun & Shade mix at the Lancaster Lowe's store expired 2023! Wow! Nothing was done about this and the products were left on the shelf. According to articles I've read, seed loses 10%+ germination efficacy each year expired. This seed should be discounted! It's full price! With the last employee I spoke with, she indicated that the Scott's rep stocks the shelves. If so, this rep needs replaced! I love shopping at Lowe's and s...
These products are Excellent! Fantastic Results!
Last fall, we resurfaced our entire front lawn first by using Round up to kill everything & removed debris & dead roots with sharp thatch rake, scraping/regrading low areas, seeded, and fertilized with Scotts Triple Action. (The lawn was mostly weeds & dead grass from drought) . The grass came in beautifully, as weeds were effectively controlled weeds (some crabgrass was stubborn). This spring, we used this fertilizer first as a preventative before temperatures were suitable for seeding. A few...

not all the seeds work... 70-75%...
I purchased the largest bag available and used it for 1/3 of the sqft area advertised hoping that it was going to even fuller than normal... i followed the spreader and watering instructions to the dot... the results after 3-4 weeks were not what I expected... Several areas with blanks..... so now i will have to reseed in all the blank spaces... I am wondering what would have happened if i used it in the area advertised... the blanks would have been even more...

The Right One.
Shopping for grass seed seems to be a daunting task.Prices for seed are all over the place and because of that you wonder whether the investment will pay off even after following the care directions.Well...it did for me with this Turf Builder Sun Shade 2.4-lb.Mixture Slash Mixture Blend Grass.I chose this grass seed because it is sun/shade and also because of the brand as I have used this brand before and have had good results.

Great grass seed
Best grass seed I have ever usef. I spread the seeds, covered with a light cover of straw (that I ask got at Lowe’s) and watered daily. The grsss seed came up in a week, and over the next week it became very thick.

Freakishly Fast Growing
Not realizing I was going to need some top soil for an area the city had back filled after some sidewalk work, I went with whatever I had in the garage which happened to be Miracle Grow All-Purpose Potting Soil for my 'top soil' and the results were shocking! I didn't even use that much, just a fine dusting over the sandy gravel filled mess the city had left me and wal-la, I blessed with the most freaky fast grass growth I have ever seen...neighbors were pulling over to ask what my secret was.....
Grass grows in well, so does everything else
The bags I bought this year vs. last year came with a ton of weeds: quick grass, creeping charlie, everything. The grass itself came up nice and thick which was nice, but I had to end up fighting off a ton of weeds in the same area. Better QA is needed, will not be buying again.

expired seed
Lowes sold me expired grass seed. I ordered it online to pickup at the store to save time. We'll see if it grows! I had to get the seed down before it rain's, and its going to rain for 5 days straight. I used about half of the bag. Not happy at all. Lowe's really needs to go thru their inventory and discard their expired goods. it shouldn't be hard to do. Read the labels 🏷🤣 that's the moral to this story. Caveat emptor

Disappointed
Bought a dethatcher, then aerated, seeded with Scotts sun and shade, used starter fertilizer and got poor results after over 25 days. Began early September in the state of CT. Waste of money and time.
