Real Wood Products Garden Lighting DIY: Create Custom Planters with String Lights
Collection Items

Place and secure a wood post inside the first planter. Have someone hold the post in place while you check that it's level. Use wood screws and corner braces to fasten the bottom of the post to the planter.
Add concrete mix to the planter. Then add water according to the package instructions to create the correct consistency. Use a trowel or hand shovel to stir the mix. It’s best to fill the planter just under halfway with concrete to ensure stability. Repeat the process for each of the planters. Allow the concrete to cure according to package instructions.
Make sure each planter is in the desired location. Double-check that it's level again as the ground beneath the planters may settle under the weight of the concrete. If you need to adjust, you can remove or add soil underneath or use sand and pea gravel to create a level surface.
Once the concrete is set, drill a few holes around the perimeter of each planter just above the concrete layer to allow for drainage.
Add a layer of rock on top of the concrete in each planter and top with a layer of potting soil.
Depending on your layout, you may need to set additional posts in the ground with concrete to support the string lights. If so, use post hole diggers for the holes and see our guide — Setting a Post With Concrete — for instructions.
Using a ladder, attach a cup hook to the top of each post. Next, string the lights through each cup hook. For ladder safety tips, including help with positioning, see our Ladder Buying Guide. If you're using plug-in or AA battery lights, test them.
Add colorful flowers to your planters and enjoy your beautiful outdoor mood lighting. First-time gardeners can read our guides — How to Plant Bulbs and Color and Design in the Garden — for further guidance on completing this final step.

What Customers Are Saying
These planters are generally well-made, with a sturdy, rustic appearance that is suitable for various plants and trees. However, some customers have experienced quality issues, such as barrels arriving in poor condition or falling apart over time. Reinforcing the barrels and adding drainage holes may be necessary. Order cancelled by Lowes.
Paid for online but cancelled by Lowes 15 minutes later . No reason given. Poor customer service.
Don’t buy these or at least pick them out yourself
Poor quality. Bought 3 and 1 fell apart. The other two I had to fix so it would work.

Watch for loose bands
These were a good buy. The top 2 bands of the one I purchased slipped down by the time I got to the cash register. Lowes offered to reduce the price, which I accepted. I knocked the bands back into place & installed several small screws (stainless, because I live on a salt air island). I belive it shoud hold up for several years (as long as I don't move it too often.

Quality not up to par
The strapping on the barrel halves had fallen. Some of the wooden pieces had fallen out and I had to hammer them back in, while trying to get the strapping back in position. The product was not as pictured... a wood-colored barrel. They (I bought 2) were a dirty gray. NO I would NOT recommend this product to a friend.

Not as pictured
I ordered two planters from curbside pickup and what I received looked nothing like the pictures shown here. The planters I received were very rusted and the wood was coming off of the metal bands. I am going to keep them only because they weigh a ton and I am struggling trying to move them. I haven't put soil in it, but I can't imagine trying to move this thing with soil and plants on the inside. Once you place it somewhere, you will not be able to move it all, so I have to be strategic with my...
Very rusty and old looking
We have been purchasing whiskey barrels for a number of year from Lowe's. The one's they have this year look like they have been the back of a warehouse getting rained on and rusting for 5 - 6 years. I tried to find the best one's they had, but our 3 year old one's we currently have look just as nice as the new one's.

They fall apart in a few years.
For as expensive as they are they sure don't last long. the metal bands on 7 of mine rusted through and they were trash after just 4 years of use. I had 2 other planters that also rotted and fell apart. No more real wood planters for me.
They work for now
12 Years ago we bought giant wine barrels from the neighboring bigbox store. They were alittle bigger, thicker oak and the rings were galvanized. Those barrels are a rare commodity these days at a reasonable price or distance to drive. Although Lowe's barrel planters were similar, biting the bullet was easier with the current sale of 15.00 off, plus my military discount was honored. I am grateful. I try to make Lowe's my first choice when ever possible. I haven't transplanted our strawberry plan...
