Bought A.O. Smith 30 gallon gas tank water heater from Lowes Los Angeles midtown on 12/17/25. Had it professionally installed. It stopped working three weeks later (10 blinks; requires air filter on what purports to be NEW water heater to be cleaned). No hot water! Submitted ticket on website 1/8/26. Customer Service phone contact number on A.O. Smith website (800) 527-1953 is a scam - nothing but adds to sell assorted unrelated products.

don't bother trying to replace anode rod
Have had this water heater for about a year and a half. decided to replace the anode rod (supposed to be a serviceable and consumable part) with an electric one which would be better for my well water. I have been a mechanic, and a tradesman, for over 30 years. I know how to remove a bolt (which is basically what an anode rod is). Used a 1-1/16" impact socket and still rounded off the head. failed after 2 months
When it worked, it did great, but after 2-ish months, the heater part dies- dont know how, but it did. If you are in the Houston area, do NOT use britton plumbing- they came out, 'fixed it' then 2 days late it failed again- now we had to wait several weeks for a replacement to be sent. if they had diagnosed it correctly the first time, then the house would have had hot water within a week vs three. DO NOT USE BRITTON PLUMBING.

AO Smith was Whirlpool, dimensionally the same.
Because this heater is identical to my old Whirlpool brand it basically dropped right in. Purchased it on-line, was at the store like ten minutes. Picked it up at 9 am and lit the pilot at 10:30. 40 gallon gas fired, Expensive at 600$

The water heater did not work. In working with the manufacturer it turned out the heater had been returned to Lowes' and was already registered to another customer! Wrong gallon size delivered
I ordered and paid for a 50 gallon natural gas water tank. I was told that I could use their installation but I would have to call back the following day to get a quote for the price for the installation. Old one expired after 16 years (not bad). This one fit in the space the old one occupied very well. The professional plumber said AO Smth makes good products and rececommended it. If this one lasts as long as the old one, I will be satisfied. So far, so good.
