Lowe’s sets the standard for care, protection and reduced maintenance of outdoor wood projects with Top Choice Water Repellent Treated Lumber with Severe Weather® Protection. The decking that saves you money and delivers the performance benefits you want.
The stabilizing system used in our Top Choice Water Repellent Treated wood minimizes the effects of the weathering cycle to help decks and deck surfaces look better. It also reduces the need to apply a brush-on water repellent after the deck's initial installation. During the treating process, water repellent is driven deep into the wood to protect all surfaces and to help minimize the weathering effects of cracking, splitting and warping. Severe Weather protection helps you build better by eliminating the expense and the time-consuming effort required to apply multiple coats of brush-on water repellents for up to two years.
The water repellent inside the wood will provide long-lasting protection to deck boards, but the protection on any weather-exposed surface will lose effectiveness over time. Ultraviolet rays from the sun, moisture, heat and foot traffic will degrade surfaces of deck boards. To help keep decks looking their best, use a quality oil- or water-based stain with UV protection, brush-on water repellent or water-repellent stain over time.
Pressure-treated wood extends the life of wood in service, which helps balance overall demand on our abundant forest resources. Wood is nature’s own material, entirely sustainable, 100% renewable, recyclable and a reusable building product. The preservatives used in Top Choice Treated Lumber were the first to receive a Green Approved Product Certification from the National Association of Home Builders® Research Center under the National Green Building standard. Top Choice Treated wood is also safe to use for play-sets and other child-focused structures, around vegetables, people and pets.
Lowe’s Standard Decking and Top Choice Water Repellent Treated wood are less corrosive to fasteners. Our above-ground framing and decking products are approved for direct contact with aluminum hardware, spindles and flashings, even in continuously wet applications. The new preservative system used in our above-ground lumber doesn't require a barrier of protection between aluminum flashings and the treated wood.
Build with confidence knowing that Lowe’s treated lumber products are standardized preservatives for use in residential and commercial applications by the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) our country’s oldest wood preservation authority. Preservative treatments receive quality control inspections by accredited third-party agencies, and standardized preservatives are approved by major building codes throughout the United States. Almost every deck is constructed on a preserved wood frame because of its strength and durability.
Top Choice Treated Lumber offers consumers the natural beauty of wood, and our water-repellent-treated wood will look better than many other decking options. Severe Weather brand pressure-treated wood needs no additional water repellent sealer for up to two years. But a deck’s appearance can be enhanced at any time with a variety of colored stains, allowing the beauty of the wood to show through. Severe Weather brand pressure-treated wood can be stained or painted after an initial drying period. Quality oil-based stains can be applied as quickly as three to four weeks, and water-based stains can be applied six to eight weeks after installation. Always follow the manufacturers recommendations on paint and stain applications. If left unstained, wood decking will fade to a gray appearance.
Lowe’s brands of treated lumber products are fully backed by a lifetime-limited warranty against fungal decay and termite attack. With just a little maintenance, your wood deck will provide enjoyment for decades.
