Tips for Downsizing the Holiday

Christmas Lights

The holidays can often mean excess. All the glitter is appealing to many, but if you aren’t one of them, you can still observe the season on a smaller scale.

Reasons for Downsizing Your Holiday Decor

  • Budget — The financial stress of today's world requires restraint this holiday season.
  • Space Limitations — You may have a limited area to display decorations or not enough room to store decorations during the off-season.
  • Energy Level or Physical Ability — There are easy, simple options for small-scale decorating.
  • Homes With Small Children — Play it safe until they get a little older
  • Time — Some folks just don’t have enough of it to spend unpacking, decorating, un-decorating and repacking.

As you downsize your current holiday inventory, donate the items you no longer want or need. It's a good way to increase your and someone else's holiday spirit. Or if you prefer, put them in your yard-sale bin for next spring. You can downsize your entertaining as well; concentrate on the fellowship, not the food.

Small-Space Decorating Ideas

Remember that the holiday spirit is inside you and not in the things you surround yourself with. Always make room for special keepsakes and items with memories attached. Even though you're in downsizing mode, it’s human nature to find new things that are fun and pretty. There's no harm in adding a new item or two to your favorite things.

  • Trees, real or artificial and short or skinny, are prelit (no need for an extra box for the lights).
  • Stockings take up little space (at least until they're filled).
  • Candles, scented or unscented, don't require a flame to enjoy.
  • Wreaths and garland provide essential greenery without using much real estate.
  • Lights are an integral part of the holidays, so add some sparkle to the season.
  • Live plants offer a lot of color and interest at a very affordable price.
  • Go homemade and you're limited only by your imagination.
