New Appliance Selector

Updated appliances make any kitchen more efficient and pleasant to work in - whether you're a gourmet chef, a master of the microwave or a take-out expert. If the appliances in your new home are outdated or not working properly, it may be time for some upgrades.

We've assembled a few quick tips to help with your shopping trip.

Cooktops/Ranges. Pick a range that suits your space best: freestanding, slide-in or drop-in. If you're interested in a dual-fuel model, like a gas cooktop with an electric oven, consider the extra steps during installation. Newer models also simplify the cleaning process with sealed burners, removable knobs and self-cleaning ovens. Finally, look for childproof controls for additional safety if you have small children.

Microwaves. Like a cooktop, choose a model based on your space: over-the-range, built-in or countertop. Newer microwaves also feature convection capabilities, which allows you to brown food, similar to a traditional oven. For evenly cooked food and easy clean up, look for a removable turntable.

Dishwashers. Drawer-style dishwashers run smaller loads, which might be ideal for households of fewer people. A family should consider a double dishwasher that holds large loads. Also look for dishwashers that adequately separate pans from delicate dinnerware.

Refrigerators. Decide on a model that works best for you: top/bottom freezer, side-by-side or French door. Select an interior that offers you optimal organization and flexibility. You may want to consider a model with adjustable door storage and spill-proof shelves.

Washers. You want a washer that fits your needs best: side-by-side models for large loads or stackable for small loads. High efficiency washers are great for conserving water and being gentler on your clothing. For the ultimate in convenience, “smart” washers can sense stains, optimize cycles, and communicate with the dryer to preset a dry cycle.

Dryers. Before you begin shopping for a dryer, check your available power source. While being more efficient than electric, gas-powered dryers are also more expensive. Try to find a dryer with a cycle that lasts as long as a wash cycle. Also, look for time saving options like dryness sensing, self-cleaning lint filter and a drum light.

Air Conditioners, Humidifiers and Purifiers. Energy efficient, window-mounted air conditioners are great ways to cool a room during a brutal summer. Besides adding moisture to the air, humidifiers minimize static electricity, and keep wallpaper fresh. Use a dehumidifier in high-humidity areas to prevent mold buildup, wood warping and musty odors. If allergies or asthma are concerns, get an air purifier to remove indoor pollutants like cigarette smoke, pet dander, pollen, mold and mildew. Check for the ENERGY STAR® sticker on all appliances to enjoy a comfortable room and a comfortable electric bill.
