Use these tips to weed your garden without the use of chemicals.
Weeding is an important part of gardening, as weeds compete with your plants and shrubs for nutrients, water and space. Here are a few tips for optimal weeding.
- Weed early and often. The best time to weed a garden or flower bed is early in the growing season when the ground is still soft and before the weed seeds have a chance to spread. Stay ahead of weeds by doing a little every day.
- Use a hoe for weeding and cultivating around live plants and shrubs. Use a bow rake to clean up and level out the soil and mulch after weeding.
- Be sure to wear a sturdy pair of work gloves when pulling weeds with thorns.
- Dispose of all weeds in recyclable yard waste bags. Check with your township or municipality to see if they dispose of these types of bags. Don't dispose of weeds in a compost pile.
