Weeding Tips

Weeding is an important part of gardening, as weeds compete with your plants and shrubs for nutrients, water and space. Here are a few tips for optimal weeding.

  • Weed early and often. The best time to weed a garden or flower bed is early in the growing season when the ground is still soft and before the weed seeds have a chance to spread. Stay ahead of weeds by doing a little every day.
  • Use a hoe for weeding and cultivating around live plants and shrubs. Use a bow rake to clean up and level out the soil and mulch after weeding.
  • Be sure to wear a sturdy pair of work gloves when pulling weeds with thorns.
  • Dispose of all weeds in recyclable yard waste bags. Check with your township or municipality to see if they dispose of these types of bags. Don't dispose of weeds in a compost pile.
