Build a sophisticated grill surround to enhance your outdoor cooking space using wall blocks.

Build Your Grill Surround

Wall block sizes vary by style and market. Use the quantity in the material list as a guide. Also, when purchasing wall block, remember that some block has an interlocking lip on the bottom for use in retaining walls, not stacked block projects.

Step 1
Course Diagram

Remove the arm attachments from the grill, or if you're installing a new grill, don't attach them to the body of grill.

Step 2
Course Diagram

Measure the width of the grill; this will determine the width of the gap between the pillars.

Step 3

Mark the area where the grill will sit on the patio or concrete with chalk.

Step 4

Begin installing using the diagram of courses. The back wall layout will vary depending on the width of the grill.

Step 5

Once you have the first course laid down, lay two 1/4-inch beads of landscape block adhesive around the entirety of the project.

Step 6

Lay the second course according to the diagram and repeat through course 8.

Step 7

Finishing the project off, you have many options. You can cap with the same block used on the pillars, as shown in the diagram below. You can add a 32-inch square limestone cap or pour a concrete cap. You might also use four 16-inch steppingstones.
