Step 1

Use the 1/2"x2'x2' birch as your base. Sand with fine sand paper.

Step 2

Chalkboard ledge

To make the ledge on the bottom, cut the 1/2"x2"x4' poplar craft board in half to make two, 2-inch pieces. Sand with fine sand paper. Glue the two pieces together to make an "L" for the ledge. Clamp and let dry.

Step 3

To make the frame surrounding the board, sand the three 1/4"x2"x2' poplar boards. Cut the boards to create the sides and top of frame. Glue and clamp to the birch base using butt joints at the corners. Let dry, then sand the edges.

Step 4

finished chalkboard with ledge

For best results, it's important to follow the directions included with the magnetic primer. Apply three coats of magnetic primer to all surfaces of board.

Step 5

Follow directions included with the chalkboard paint and apply two coats of chalkboard paint to all surfaces. Let dry.

Good to Know

"Season" your chalkboard before using. Using the wide side of a piece of chalk, cover the board with chalk, then erase with a dry, soft cloth.
