Project Resources

Step 1

Fabric with sleeves for dowels

Determine the fabric size you need for your sling. (The Book Sling Sewing Guide shows fabric sizes for the slings shown.) Where possible, use factory-sewn edges (shown) instead of making seams. Sew the sling with a 2-1/2-inch-wide casing along each long edge.

Good to Know

The length of the sling should be no more than 44 inches -- the length of the dowels (48 inches) minus 2 inches on each end for the brackets and overhangs. Cut the fabric to a width that will cover most of the largest books on both sides after allowing 6 inches for the two rod sleeves.

Step 2

Trim the dowels as needed or leave them the full 48 inches (minus about 1/8 inch to make smooth cuts on the ends and remove painted markings). Sand the ends smooth. You can leave the wood bare or finish as desired.

Step 3

Use a level and tape measure to position the brackets. Allow for dowel overhangs of at least a 1-inch on each side. Install the brackets using wall anchors as needed.

Step 4

Completed Book Sling

Push the dowels through the fabric sleeves until they’re centered. Lay the dowels centered in the brackets and add books for magazines.

Good to Know

Most dowels have a slight bow. Where that’s the case, position the dowel with the bow facing up at the center of the sling. Screws in the brackets can be tightened to hold them in position.
