Turn a simple vintage plant stand into a color- coordinated mix of succulents and contrasting terra-cotta.

Spray paint selection at Lowe's

Do you like terra-cotta pots? I do. But they dry out like the Sahara Desert in our climate. Succulents, which are extremely drought tolerant, are their perfect partners.

Most of the succulents we get locally are smaller plants. They don't make much of an impact in the garden bed, but they are eye catching in containers where you can truly see them.

I found a vintage plant stand at my favorite antiques store. I expected it to quickly sell, but after a year of watching it languish, I asked the owner how much she would take for it. She marked it down by half.

Before long I was in the paint aisle at Lowe's. You can call me the Spray Paint Queen because when I gaze upon a rack of color like this, I am overwhelmed with possibilities.

I could have left the stand all shabby and rusty but I wanted to play off the color of the succulents, so I chose a gray-green hue, Leafy Rise. Back home, within 20 minutes the stand was fully painted.

In the video, you can see how I gave this plant stand new life. Because it has casters, I can move it into partial shade if we have a record-breaking summer as hot as 2011.

Once I tucked the succulents into their pots, I situated the containers here and there until I had a container recipe that satisfied. Lowe's has an excellent selection of succulents. Although you'll find them with the orchids and other indoor plants, they also enjoy being outdoors throughout summer.

When frost threatens in fall, I can just wheel this little cart indoors until next spring. Pretty neat, huh?
