The Importance of Outdoor Motion Lights
One of the best ways to deter crime at home is to install outdoor motion lights. An outdoor motion sensor with lights detects when someone is close to your property and automatically turns on, alerting you to their presence. Intruders won’t be able to approach your home under the cover of darkness. Motion sensor lights also alert you to animals that may wander onto your property, eat vegetables from your garden or get in the trash cans.
Other benefits of outdoor motion lights include savings on energy costs. Because they’re triggered to come on when motion is detected, they don’t stay illuminated around the clock. They also provide much-needed light when you return home in the evening. If you’re searching for your keys, juggling groceries or doing anything that distracts you, the automatic lighting comes on without the need to worry about switching on an exterior outdoor light.
In selecting the right motion light for you, look for products that have features like adjustable lamp heads so you can focus the beam of light where you want it, a water-resistant housing to reduce the risk of injury or have a dimmable setting to help further reduce energy costs.
There are several types of motion sensor light bulbs to use, including LED and halogen lights. Determine which bulb is right for you and consider the bulb type, the light pattern (flood, spot, etc.) and location where you want to use it.

Are Motion Sensor Lights Easy to Install?
Battery- or solar-powered motion lights are easy to install and require no wiring. However, installing hard-wired motion lights requires you to work with electricity. The process is easier if you’re replacing an existing motion light. If you’re wiring for a new light, call in a licensed electrician.
Before installing any type of lighting, take appropriate steps to help ensure your safety.
- Turn the electricity OFF at the main fuse box (or the circuit breaker box) that controls the power to the fixture or the room you’re working on.
- Use a voltage meter to test the wires to ensure the power is OFF.
- Place the wall switch in the OFF position.
- All electrical connections must comply with local codes. Check with local authorities to see if a permit is required.
- When in doubt about the installation, consult a licensed electrician.
- Don’t use bulbs that have a wattage greater than specified for the fixture (if applicable).
