Create the perfect accessory to jazz up any yard. Building a water fountain will give your yard the look and personality that you've wanted.
Follow these steps to build your water fountain.
Select a focal point in the yard where you would like to put the fountain. Make sure it is a level spot in the yard without low-hanging branches.
Choose a container. If you purchase a pot in which latex has been mixed into the concrete, you won't need to waterproof it. However, if it doesn't have latex mixed in you will need to seal it against freezing and chipping.
Use a 5/8-inch drill bit, then a coarse cylindrical rasp to enlarge the drainage hole.
Select the proper pump. There are many options to choose from depending on whether you want water shooting into the air from the fountain or a gentle bubble.
Put it together. Test the pump before permanently installing it.
Place pump inside pot with the electrical cord running outside of the drainage hole, then use a silicone sealant to seal the hole.
You may want to hire an electrician to do the wiring. This will add to the cost, but you can save by digging the trench yourself and buying the electrical supplies.
Add 2 tablespoons of household bleach to the water once a week to keep the water free of algae.
If your fountain may be visited by wildlife, use an algaecide that's specially formulated to be harmless to animals instead of bleach.
