Clean a Dryer Vent

Clean a Lint Screen and a Lint Screen Cavity

Step 1

Remove the lint screen by pulling it straight out of the cavity. Pull the lint off the screen by hand, and then gently clean the excess with the dryer vent brush.

 

Step 2

Reach down into the cavity with the dryer vent brush, and gently twist it around, pulling out any lint.

 

Step 3

As you pull out clumps of lint, remove them from the brush using a vacuum hose. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the lint screen cavity is clean.

Clean a Dryer Vent

Step 1

Unplug the dryer and turn off the gas valve if you own a gas dryer.

 

Step 2

Carefully move the dryer away from the wall to the extent that the dryer vent will allow.

 

Step 3

Remove the vent from the back of the dryer by unscrewing the vent clamp and sliding the vent out of the elbow-shaped joint.

 

Step 4

Using your dryer vent brush, remove the lint from the vent as well as the hole in the back of the dryer.

 

Step 5

Reconnect the vent and move the dryer back against the wall.

Clean the Outside Portion of the Dryer Vent

Step 1

Locate the dryer vent cover on the outside of your house.

 

Step 2

Remove the cover; the vent duct should slide right out if it isn't fastened or sealed to the home's exterior.

 

Step 3

Using your dryer vent brush, remove the lint from inside the hole.

 

Step 4

Replace the vent duct and the cover.

 

Step 5

Return inside and reconnect the dryer.


Step 6

Run the dryer for a few minutes to make sure there’s no obstruction as air flows through the vent.
