to join our world-class business solutions development, operations,
and IT planning organization. Lowe’s has always recognized

IT offers a variety of employment opportunities ranging from
Summer Internships to Senior IT Management positions.
IT Internship Opportunities
Lowe’s IT frequently offers internship opportunities
to qualified college students. Interns are offered challenging
assignments on project teams throughout the IT organization.
Entry Level Opportunities
Candidates for our Entry Level Program should have a BS degree
in either Information Systems or Computer Science, or equivalent
work experience. Persons selected for the Entry Level Program
will have the opportunity to learn about many aspects of Lowe’s
business, including Customer Service, Operations, Merchandising,
Logistics, and Distribution. Part of their three month training
program includes working at the Lowe’s Support Center
handling support calls from the 1,025+ Lowe’s store
locations. They will receive training in programming languages,
JCL, data modeling tools, and Lowe’s development methodology.
After successful completion of the entry level program, these
persons will be assigned to a project team in Business Solutions,
Solutions Delivery, IT Engineering or IT Operations.
Solutions Delivery
The mission of Solutions Delivery is to design, develop, enhance,
maintain, and implement effective business applications for
Lowe’s. These business applications reside in the Client
/ Server, UNIX, Z-Series mainframe, and web-based environments.
Applications are developed in a variety of development tools
including C, COBOL, and Java. Analysts identify detailed user
requirements, select appropriate solutions, prepare cost estimates,
and serve as the focal point for technical solutions for our
end-users. Data Analysts work closely with Solutions Delivery
team members to analyze Lowe’s data requirements and
maintain corporate data models and standards. Candidates for
positions in this department will possess strong analytical
skills combined with a solid technical background. Available
positions include Programmer, Programmer Analyst, Senior Programmer
Analyst, Senior Systems Analyst and Project Manager. The flexible
nature of the Solutions Delivery organization offers our staff
members the opportunity to work on projects in various business
areas.
Other personnel in the Solutions Delivery organization, Technology
Deployment Analysts and Managers, are responsible for effectively
deploying technology to our internal business customers. The
Technology Deployment staff manages all IT hardware and software
assets, the IT Equipment Distribution Facility, and administers
all hardware and technology moves, adds, and changes.
Business Solutions
Lowe’s Business Solutions Group supports all areas of
Lowe’s business including Store Operations, Sales, Merchandising,
Logistics, Distribution, Marketing, Finance, Administration,
and Human Resources. IT Solutions Managers and Analysts work
with these areas keeping application development projects
aligned with the needs of the business. Working closely with
Solutions Delivery, IT Engineering and IT Operations personnel,
Solution Analysts provide design, analysis, and critical business
knowledge to application development project teams. Application
experts in each of the business systems areas provide support
for key business application systems. Decision Support Analysts
maintain the Lowe’s Information Warehouse and provide
services surrounding Lowe’s web-based business intelligence
tools to the end-user community.
Another critical area within Lowe’s Business Solutions
Group is the IT Support Center. Support Technicians and Support
Analysts provide front-line end-user support for all hardware,
software, and services provided by IT to Lowe’s Corporate
Offices, stores and field offices.
IT Operations
IT Operations is responsible for daily operation of the technology
and infrastructure for the company’s information resources
including those that reside within Lowe’s Corporate
Data Center and our remote sites. These systems include all
voice and data communications, mainframe, mid-range and Windows-based
systems. IT Operations is made up of 3 groups: Computer Operations,
Distribution Technology Operations, and Enterprise System
Management.
Computer Operations personnel schedule, manage, operate and
monitor our mainframe application systems and networks to
insure timely delivery of centralized business applications
to our internal and external user community. Examples of positions
in Data Center Operations include Operators, Shift Supervisors,
Schedulers, Operations Analysts and Email Administrators.
Lowe’s distribution network is made up of numerous
highly automated Regional Distribution Centers, Specialty
Distribution Centers and Millwork facilities located throughout
the United States. Distribution Technology Operations personnel
located in each of these facilities are responsible for installing,
operating, and supporting the entire technical infrastructure
that serves Lowe’s distribution network. Systems Administrators
are responsible for the 7x24 operation of the data communications
infrastructure within all remote distribution facilities,
as well as the operation of UNIX, Windows XP and Radio Frequency
computing platforms.
Enterprise System Management personnel are responsible for
7x24 monitoring of system and network performance and security
monitoring for Lowe’s computing platforms and networks.
The group also provides capacity planning for our technical
infrastructure. Positions in this area include Network Control
Technicians, System Administrators, and Capacity Planning
Analysts.
IT Engineering
With over 1,025 stores and numerous Distribution Centers located
throughout the United States, IT Engineering personnel are
responsible for architecting, specifying, developing and supporting
the entire technical infrastructure that serves all of Lowe’s
computing needs including all voice and data communications,
Z-Series, CICS, DB2, Teradata,, Windows 2000, Windows XP,
LAN, WAN and CAD technologies. Their scope of responsibility
includes our stores, distribution facilities, field locations
and remote computing by field staff. This area is organized
into 5 groups: Technology Integration & Database Engineering,
Z-Series & Storage Engineering, Mid-Range Server & Workstation Engineering, Communication Services, and UNIX
Engineering.
In our Technology Integration & Database Engineering
team, Database Analysts and Database Administrators design
and maintain computer data for all systems using DB2, Teradata,
Sybase, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. Additionally, Project
Managers organize and manage technology infrastructure projects
needed for the successful delivery of large business-driven
initiatives.
The Z-Series & Storage Engineering staff installs and
maintains system software and provides configuration planning
and management for all large systems platforms housed on our
Corporate Data Center. Available positions include System
Programmers, Storage Managers and Project Managers. Available

Mid-Range Server & Workstation Engineers architect, configure,
install and maintain Windows/Intel-based mid-range server
and PC computing platforms for the entire company.
Communications Services personnel are responsible for architecture
planning, implementation, and operation of the LAN networks
and all terrestrial and satellite-based WAN networks which
support Lowe’s business application systems and voice
communication requirements. Network Engineers, Voice Telecom
Engineers and Communication Services Project Managers are
examples of positions in this area.
UNIX Engineers take the lead in architecting and configuring
both UNIX-based, Radio Frequency and Computer Aided Design
platforms used in our stores and distribution facilities.
They engineer various peripheral devices used in those locations,
as well. They are also responsible for the web server environment
which services increasing numbers of our business applications.
Information Technology Strategy
The mission of the IT Strategy Group is to ensure that the
IT organization proactively participates in the overall strategy
and planning process for the corporation. Other goals are
to facilitate the effective operation of the IT organization,
and to guide practices and techniques within IT so as to maximize
its value to Lowe’s. IT Strategy is composed of 3 groups:
IT Strategy and Planning, IT Consulting and Quality, and Information
Security.
The Information Security team is responsible for implementing
processes, practices and techniques to secure Lowe’s
computing and environments. They work closely with other areas
of IT and our user community to identify and address areas
of risk. Positions in this area include Information Security
Administrators, Analysts and Project Managers.
IT Strategy & Planning manages the overall IT Portfolio
(IT Planning Analysts), guides the evolution of Lowe’s
technology architecture (IT Architecture Analysts), and facilitates
research of emerging technologies (IT Research Analysts).
IT Consulting & Quality personnel provide in-house consulting
to other areas of IT on project management techniques and
the use of ‘best practices’ across all areas of
IT.
Information Technology Professional Services
IT Professional Services manages overall staffing (permanent
and temporary) and professional development within the IT
organization. In addition, IT Planning Analysts facilitate
IT’s financial planning and financial management activities.
