Good Idea: To avoid splitting the boards, predrill holes for the screws. |

1.
Cut half-laps in the ends
of each of the 22 1/2" 2x2's and assemble them with glue and screws.
2.
Cut a 24" x 24" square of hardware cloth. Fold the edges of the hardware
cloth over the outside of the 2x2 frame and staple the hardware cloth
in place.
3.
Secure the 22 1/2" pieces of 1x4 to opposite sides of the 2x2 frame with
2" screws.
4.
Use a jig saw to cut out handholds 1/2" down from the top and centered
in the long side pieces.
5.
Secure the 24 1/2" pieces of 1x4 to the two remaining sides of the frame.
Sand all cut edges.
6.
Brush on a coat of polyurethane to protect the sifter.
If you opt for long handles, you have two choices:
- Screw
the handles to the bottom of the frame. The handles will easily span
the top of a wheelbarrow, so you can sift the compost into the wheelbarrow
by sliding the handles back and forth.
Leave
the handles loose and mark them at the point where they hang over the
sides of the wheel barrow. Partially drive screws into the handles at
the marks. When you place the long handles over the wheelbarrow with
the screws pointing down, they act as runners on which you can slide
the compost sifter, to sift the compost into the wheel barrow.

Good idea: You
can also use your compost sifter to sort bulbs. At the end of
the season, carefully remove bulbs and soil from the planting
bed into the sifter. Shake gently to locate and separate the bulbs,
especially the ones that need dividing. |
