Repairing and Replacing a Kitchen Sprayer

Skill Level: Beginner

Most people do not give their kitchen sprayer a second thought— until it stops working. But never fear; you do not have to do without it, and you do not need a plumber to repair it. An average homeowner should be able to repair or replace a kitchen sprayer in a couple of hours, using common household tools. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a service to you.

Repairing a Sprayer
Location of Diverter Valve
Complete Sprayer Assembly

Check for mineral deposits that can clog the aerator and cause low water pressure.

  1. Unscrew the aerator from the sprayer head and clean the aerator with a soft brush and mild cleaning solution.

  2. For heavy deposits, soak the aerator in vinegar before cleaning. Reassemble the aerator and sprayer head.

Check the diverter valve on the kitchen faucet. Worn or clogged diverter valves can also cause low pressure in the sprayer.

  1. Turn off the water supply to the faucet, and remove the spout with pliers.

  2. Remove the diverter valve from the faucet and inspect it for mineral deposits and excessive wear.

  3. Clean the valve with mild cleaning solution and a soft brush.

  4. For heavy deposits, soak the valve in vinegar before cleaning. If the valve is worn, replace it with a new one. Reassemble the faucet and turn the water supply back on.

Check the sprayer hose for cracks, leaks and wear. If the hose is faulty, replace it.

  1. Turn off the water supply to the sink.

  2. Unscrew the hose from the sprayer nipple at the faucet, and drain the water from the hose into a bucket.

  3. Unscrew the sprayer head from the end of the hose, and remove the washer from the handle mount. Check the washer for wear and cracks. If the washer is worn or cracked, replace it. Remove the retaining clip holding the hose to the handle mount. Throw away the old hose and replace it. Reassemble the sprayer and turn the water supply back on.

Replacing the Sprayer
  1. Sometimes replacing the entire sprayer may be the easiest way to solve sprayer problems. Shut off the water supply to the sink. Unscrew the sprayer hose from the faucet sprayer nipple and drain the water into a bucket. Unscrew the mounting nut that holds the sprayer base in place. Remove the entire assembly.

  2. Install the new sprayer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Turn the water supply to the sink back on and test the sprayer. If the new sprayer does not work, you may need to check the diverter valve in the faucet.
